Selenious acid is an inorganic selenium compound used as a dietary selenium supplement in parenteral nutrition formulations to prevent selenium deficiency in patients unable to receive oral nutrition. Selenium is an essential trace element required for the biosynthesis of selenoproteins including glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases, which protect cells from oxidative damage. Selenium deficiency has been associated with increased cancer risk, particularly ovarian and prostate cancers, leading to its investigation as a chemopreventive agent.
