Sodium Fluoride
Sodium fluoride is an inorganic fluoride compound used in dental caries prevention through fluoridation of water supplies and in fluoride supplements, toothpastes, and topical fluoride treatments for remineralization of tooth enamel. Fluoride ions substitute for hydroxyl groups in hydroxyapatite to form fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid dissolution by oral bacteria. Investigational uses in bone density improvement and as a component of PET imaging agents are under study.
