Streptococcus pneumoniae polysaccharide conjugated to Corynebacterium diphtheriae CRM197 is a vaccine component in which pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides are covalently linked to the non-toxic CRM197 diphtheria toxin mutant carrier protein to enhance immunogenicity and provide T-cell-dependent immune responses including immunological memory in infants. The carrier protein converts the T-independent polysaccharide antigens to T-dependent antigens, enabling robust long-term protection against pneumococcal disease. This conjugation chemistry is used in the Prevnar series of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.
