Tromethamine (TRIS) is an alkalinizing agent that buffers metabolic acidosis by accepting protons and increasing urinary pH, used in conditions such as cardiac surgery, respiratory acidosis, and metabolic acidosis. It is also used as a pharmaceutical excipient and as a salt-forming agent in drug formulations (e.g., ketorolac tromethamine) to enhance solubility. Its buffering capacity does not require carbon dioxide excretion, making it useful in patients with impaired ventilation.
