This bisphosphonate medication is given as an annual or more frequent intravenous infusion to treat osteoporosis and prevent bone fractures, and is also used to treat elevated calcium caused by cancer, bone complications from multiple myeloma, and bone metastases from solid tumors. It works by attaching to bone surfaces and blocking the cells (osteoclasts) that break down bone, preserving bone density. Flu-like symptoms are common after the first infusion, and a rare but serious complication is osteonecrosis of the jaw, particularly in cancer patients.
