Protriptyline is a secondary amine tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) that inhibits the neuronal reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine by blocking their respective transporters, thereby increasing monoaminergic neurotransmission in the CNS. It is used for the treatment of major depressive disorder and is notable among TCAs for its activating rather than sedating properties, and has also been used for attention deficit disorder and sleep apnea.
