Sodium Iodide I 131
Sodium iodide I-131 is a beta and gamma-emitting radioactive iodine used therapeutically for ablation of normal thyroid remnants post-thyroidectomy, treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer metastases, and hyperthyroidism, as well as diagnostically for thyroid cancer staging. The thyroid's avid uptake of iodide concentrates the radioactive iodine-131, where beta emissions deliver targeted radiation to destroy thyroid tissue. It is a cornerstone of differentiated thyroid cancer management following surgery.
