Valganciclovir
This antiviral prodrug is converted in the body to ganciclovir and is used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in AIDS patients and to prevent CMV disease in transplant recipients. It works by blocking the viral DNA polymerase enzyme that CMV needs to replicate. It can cause significant bone marrow suppression, so regular blood count monitoring is essential.
