Sertaconazole is a benzothiophene-substituted imidazole antifungal agent used topically for the treatment of tinea pedis (athlete's foot) and atopic dermatitis complicated by fungal infection. It exerts dual antifungal activity by inhibiting fungal cytochrome P450-mediated lanosterol demethylation (disrupting ergosterol synthesis) and by direct membrane disruption through its benzothiophene moiety. The dual mechanism provides broad-spectrum activity against dermatophytes and Candida species.
