Sorbitol
Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol used as an osmotic laxative, diuretic, humectant, and sweetener in pharmaceutical formulations, and as a vehicle in oral medications and liquid dosage forms. As an osmotic laxative, it draws water into the intestinal lumen to soften stool and stimulate bowel movements, used for constipation and bowel preparation. It is also used as a renal excipient in certain dialysis procedures and as an oral sweetener in diabetic formulations since it is poorly absorbed.
