A natural lung surfactant derived from calf lung lavage, used to treat and prevent respiratory distress syndrome in premature newborns. It reduces surface tension in the air sacs of the lungs to keep them from collapsing with each breath. It is instilled directly into the airways of premature infants shortly after birth.

Mechanism of Action

Reduces surface tension at the air-liquid interface in the pulmonary alveoli, preventing alveolar collapse during expiration and improving lung compliance and gas exchange.
