Sodium pertechnetate is an inorganic technetium salt used as a general-purpose radiopharmaceutical precursor and diagnostic imaging agent for thyroid scintigraphy, Meckel's diverticulum scanning, and radionuclide ventriculography in prostate cancer and rheumatoid arthritis assessment. As the pertechnetate anion (TcO4-), it is a chemical analog of iodide and is concentrated by the thyroid gland and gastric mucosa via the sodium-iodide symporter. It is the primary precursor for labeling other technetium-99m radiopharmaceuticals.
