Sulfamethazine
Sulfamethazine (sulfadimidine) is an intermediate-acting sulfonamide antibiotic used in veterinary medicine and historically in human medicine for treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and meningitis caused by susceptible bacteria. It inhibits dihydropteroate synthase, blocking folic acid synthesis in susceptible organisms. It is primarily used today in veterinary practice due to sulfonamide resistance and availability of superior human antibiotics.
