This anticonvulsant medication is used as an add-on treatment for partial seizures in adults and children over the age of twelve. It works by blocking the reuptake of GABA, an inhibitory brain chemical, thereby reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can paradoxically worsen in some patients who do not have epilepsy, so it is only recommended for this condition.
