Ursodiol
Ursodiol (ursodeoxycholic acid, UDCA) is a naturally occurring hydrophilic bile acid that reduces cholesterol saturation in bile by decreasing hepatic cholesterol secretion and absorption, and also exerts cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects on hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. It is approved for dissolving cholesterol gallstones, treating primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and preventing gallstone formation after bariatric surgery, and is investigated in colorectal cancer prevention and other liver conditions. Its hepatoprotective mechanism involves displacement of toxic hydrophobic bile acids.
