Vonicog alfa is a recombinant von Willebrand factor produced in Chinese hamster ovary cells that replaces or supplements endogenous VWF in patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD), restoring platelet adhesion to subendothelial collagen and stabilizing coagulation factor VIII from premature degradation. It is used for the treatment and prophylaxis of bleeding episodes in adults with severe type 3 VWD when desmopressin (DDAVP) treatment alone is ineffective or contraindicated. Its recombinant origin avoids the risk of viral transmission associated with plasma-derived VWF products.

Mechanism of Action

As a recombinant protein, it replicates the function of the naturally occurring human protein, supplementing or replacing deficient endogenous production to restore normal physiological activity.
