A broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone, ciprofloxacin halts bacterial DNA replication by inhibiting the enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. It treats urinary and respiratory tract infections, typhoid fever, and certain gram-negative infections, and is stockpiled for anthrax prophylaxis. Marketed as Cipro and Ciloxan, it carries the formula C17H18FN3O3. Tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and prolongation of the cardiac QT interval are recognized safety concerns that shape its use, and rising resistance has narrowed some of its former applications.
