Sodium gluconate is a sodium salt of gluconic acid used primarily as an electrolyte and pH-buffering agent in pharmaceutical formulations, dialysate solutions, and as an iron chelator precursor. It provides a readily metabolizable organic anion that can be used as an alkalinizing agent in parenteral solutions, offering gentler alkalinization than bicarbonate. It has also been used in bladder irrigation solutions and investigated for mineral supplementation.
