Vinbarbital is a barbiturate derivative that enhances GABA-A receptor chloride channel conductance and inhibits glutamate-mediated excitatory neurotransmission, producing sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects. Like other barbiturates, it was used for insomnia, anxiety, and seizure disorders. It has largely been replaced by benzodiazepines and newer agents due to its narrow therapeutic index and risk of dependence.
