Prothrombin (Factor II) is a vitamin K-dependent zymogen coagulation factor that is proteolytically activated to thrombin by the prothrombinase complex (Factor Xa + Factor Va), with thrombin subsequently converting fibrinogen to fibrin and activating platelets. Prothrombin complex concentrates containing prothrombin are used for reversal of vitamin K antagonist anticoagulation in urgent situations.
