Strontium chloride Sr-89 is a beta-emitting radiopharmaceutical used for palliative treatment of bone pain from osteoblastic skeletal metastases in prostate, breast, and other cancers. Strontium-89 is selectively taken up by metabolically active bone at metastatic sites as a calcium analog via active transport by osteoblasts, delivering local beta radiation to reduce pain and tumor burden. The cytotoxic beta emissions have a path length of approximately 8 mm in tissue, limiting radiation to the immediate vicinity of the metastatic lesion.
