Racemic Mixture
An equimolar (1:1) mixture of two enantiomers of a chiral compound, resulting in no net optical rotation. Many drugs were historically marketed as racemates before chiral separation technologies enabled development of single-enantiomer drugs. The FDA and EMA now require characterization of individual enantiomer pharmacology during drug development.
