A synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen that was widely prescribed from the 1940s to 1970s to prevent miscarriage, though it was later found to be ineffective for this purpose. Its use in pregnant women led to serious reproductive tract abnormalities and cancers in their children, particularly clear cell carcinoma of the vagina in daughters. It is now used in limited circumstances for prostate cancer treatment.
