Dental local anaesthesia is the setting for levonordefrin, a sympathomimetic vasoconstrictor formulated together with a local anaesthetic rather than used alone. Constricting vessels at the injection site slows systemic absorption of the anaesthetic, which both prolongs the block and reduces bleeding in the operative field. The vasoconstrictor contributes nothing to nerve conduction blockade itself; that effect belongs to the anaesthetic component, and the two act on entirely separate targets.
