Penicillin V
Acid stability is what allows penicillin V to be given by mouth where benzylpenicillin cannot, and that property defines its clinical niche. The agent treats mild to moderate bacterial infections, streptococcal pharyngitis and skin infections among them, acting through the beta-lactam mechanism common to the class: interference with the cross-linking of peptidoglycan leaves the bacterial cell wall unable to withstand internal osmotic pressure. Its spectrum is narrower than that of the aminopenicillins and it offers no protection against beta-lactamase-producing staphylococci. The compound is a small molecule with formula C16H18N2O5S and a molecular weight of approximately 350.4 g/mol. It is approved and has completed the final phase of clinical development.
This oral penicillin antibiotic treats mild to moderate bacterial infections such as strep throat and skin infections.
