Chymotrypsin
A proteolytic enzyme derived from bovine or porcine pancreas that breaks down peptide bonds in proteins, used historically in ophthalmic surgery to facilitate cataract extraction by dissolving zonular fibers, and as an anti-inflammatory agent. Its systemic use as an anti-inflammatory is largely historical and not well supported by modern evidence. Current ophthalmic practice has moved to phacoemulsification techniques that do not require chymotrypsin.
