Potassium oxybate is the potassium salt form of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a naturally occurring CNS depressant that acts on GABA-B receptors and specific GHB receptors in the brain to promote slow-wave sleep and reduce daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. It is used as an alternative formulation of sodium oxybate for the treatment of narcolepsy, particularly to reduce the sodium burden in patients with hypertension or sodium-restricted diets.
