Sodium fluoride F-18 is a bone-seeking positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent in which fluorine-18 replaces hydroxyl groups in hydroxyapatite at sites of active bone turnover, used to detect osteoblastic bone metastases and primary bone tumors in prostate and non-small cell lung cancer. The high extraction efficiency of fluoride by bone and favorable PET imaging characteristics of F-18 provide superior sensitivity and resolution compared to conventional bone scintigraphy. It allows whole-body bone imaging for staging and response assessment.
