Withdrawal from the market, rather than current practice, defines the status of clobutinol. The compound acted centrally on the cough centre to suppress cough and was for a period available without prescription in several countries. Reports of serious cardiac rhythm disturbance led to its removal from those markets, and it is no longer in therapeutic use. The case is cited as an example of an over-the-counter antitussive withdrawn on cardiac safety grounds after wide exposure in the general population.
