This recombinant interferon used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) works by modulating the immune system to reduce the frequency and severity of relapses and slow disability progression. It is thought to reduce the migration of immune cells across the blood-brain barrier and suppress inflammatory activity in the nervous system. It is administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.
