This fast-acting barbiturate has been used as an intravenous anesthetic to induce unconsciousness before surgery and in emergency settings such as controlling severe seizures or reducing brain swelling. It works by enhancing the effects of GABA, a calming neurotransmitter in the brain. Its use has largely been replaced by newer anesthetic agents in many countries.
