Triglycerides, Medium-Chain
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are glycerol esters of medium-chain fatty acids (C6-C12, primarily caprylic C8 and capric C10 acids) that are hydrolyzed and absorbed more rapidly than long-chain triglycerides, entering portal circulation directly without requiring chylomicron formation and undergoing preferential hepatic beta-oxidation to produce ketone bodies. They are used as nutritional supplements and medical foods in malabsorption syndromes, ketogenic diet therapy for refractory epilepsy, and MCT-based formulas for patients with impaired fat digestion. Their rapid conversion to ketones has also generated interest in Alzheimer's disease research as an alternative brain energy substrate.
