Xenon-127 (127Xe) is a radioactive isotope of xenon that emits gamma rays suitable for nuclear medicine imaging, historically used for pulmonary ventilation scintigraphy to evaluate regional lung function and airway distribution. As an inhaled radiogas, it distributes according to ventilation patterns in the lung, allowing detection of ventilation defects associated with obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism, and emphysema. It has been largely superseded by technetium-99m aerosol and krypton-81m in most centers.
