Idoxuridine
This antiviral drug works by incorporating into viral DNA in place of thymidine, disrupting replication of DNA viruses such as herpes simplex. It is used topically as eye drops to treat herpes simplex keratitis (viral eye infection) and as a skin cream for herpes labialis. It is too toxic for systemic use and is limited to topical applications.
