This long-acting nitrate is used to prevent angina attacks and treat chronic heart failure by dilating blood vessels, reducing preload and afterload on the heart. It is the active metabolite of isosorbide dinitrate and has more predictable bioavailability. As with all nitrates, tolerance can develop and drug-free periods are needed to maintain effectiveness.
