Propanidid is a short-acting intravenous anesthetic agent of the eugenol ester class that causes rapid loss of consciousness through CNS depression, likely through GABA-A receptor potentiation and other membrane effects, with an ultrashort duration of action due to rapid hydrolysis by plasma cholinesterases. It was withdrawn from clinical use in many countries due to a high incidence of anaphylactic reactions attributed to its solvent, cremophor EL.
