Rimantadine is an adamantane antiviral agent structurally related to amantadine that inhibits the M2 ion channel of influenza A virus, blocking the hydrogen ion influx required for viral uncoating and preventing release of viral RNA into the host cell cytoplasm. It is used for prophylaxis and treatment of influenza A infections, though widespread resistance among circulating influenza A strains has significantly limited its clinical utility.
