Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antimicrobial compound combining silver ions and sulfadiazine that acts through dual mechanisms: silver ions denature bacterial DNA and disrupt bacterial cell membranes, while sulfadiazine inhibits dihydropteroate synthase to block folate synthesis, providing broad-spectrum activity including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is used extensively for prevention and treatment of wound infection in partial and full-thickness burn injuries. The sustained release of silver ions from the cream provides prolonged antimicrobial activity at the wound surface.
