This antiretroviral medication (also known as AZT) was the first approved treatment for HIV infection and works by blocking reverse transcriptase, an enzyme the virus needs to copy its genetic material. It is now used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy and is also given to HIV-positive pregnant women and their newborns to reduce the risk of transmitting HIV from mother to child. Bone marrow suppression causing anemia is the main side effect requiring monitoring.
