Dabigatran is an oral anticoagulant that directly inhibits thrombin, the enzyme that converts fibrinogen to fibrin at the final step of the clotting cascade. It prevents strokes in atrial fibrillation and treats and prevents venous blood clots. Marketed as Pradaxa, it has the formula C25H25N7O3 and, unlike warfarin, requires no routine coagulation monitoring.
