Tribromsalan (TBS, 3,4,5-tribromosalicylanilide) is a halogenated salicylanilide with antibacterial and antifungal properties that disrupts microbial membrane integrity and inhibits enzyme systems through electrophilic reactivity. It was used as an antimicrobial ingredient in soaps and personal care products but was banned in the United States by the FDA due to photocontact sensitization causing photoallergic contact dermatitis and lack of proven clinical benefit over plain soap. It represents an early antimicrobial triclosan-related agent with unacceptable safety profile.
