Racemic Mixture
An equimolar (1:1) mixture of two enantiomers of a chiral compound, resulting in no net optical rotation. Many drugs were historically marketed as racemates before chiral separation technologies enabled development of single-enantiomer drugs. The FDA and EMA now require characterization of individual enantiomer pharmacology during drug development.
Exemples
- Omeprazole: racemic mixture of S- and R-enantiomers (esomeprazole is the chiral switch)
- Ketamine: racemic mixture; S-ketamine (esketamine) approved separately for depression
- Albuterol: racemic; R-albuterol (levalbuterol) marketed as the active enantiomer
