Sulfisoxazole is a short-acting sulfonamide antibiotic with high urinary and tissue concentrations, used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, acute otitis media (in combination with erythromycin), and nocardiosis caused by susceptible organisms. It achieves higher free drug concentrations in urine than many sulfonamides due to lower plasma protein binding, making it particularly effective for urinary infections. Combination with erythromycin was previously used for penicillin-allergic patients with acute otitis media.
