Sulfur is an elemental non-metal with keratolytic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, used topically for treatment of acne, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, scabies, and psoriasis. Its mechanism involves formation of hydrogen sulfide and pentathionic acid by skin surface bacteria, which are directly toxic to Sarcoptes scabiei mites and bacteria, and keratolytic activity that reduces comedone formation. It is one of the oldest medicinal substances and remains in use in over-the-counter topical formulations.
