Triamterene
Potassium-sparing action separates triamterene from the loop and thiazide diuretics, which promote potassium loss along with sodium and water. The drug increases renal excretion of excess fluid in oedema arising from heart failure, hepatic disease or renal disease while retaining potassium, and it is frequently combined with a potassium-wasting diuretic so that the two effects offset one another. The corresponding hazard is hyperkalaemia, and both serum potassium and renal function are monitored during treatment for that reason.
