Sulfathiazole
Sulfathiazole is a short-acting sulfonamide antibiotic used in combination topical preparations for vaginal infections (combined with sulfacetamide and sulfabenzamide) and historically for systemic bacterial infections before development of more effective agents. It inhibits dihydropteroate synthase in susceptible bacteria, blocking folate synthesis. Its combination use in triple sulfonamide vaginal preparations exploits synergistic antibacterial coverage against multiple pathogens.
