Sulfur hexafluoride is a chemically inert, non-toxic gas used as an ultrasound contrast agent (SonoVue/Lumason) encapsulated in phospholipid microbubbles to enhance echocardiographic imaging of cardiac structures and vascularity of focal liver lesions and other organs. The microbubbles oscillate resonantly under ultrasound insonation, dramatically increasing acoustic backscatter from blood pool to improve contrast between vasculature and surrounding tissue. It is also used in ophthalmology as a vitreous tamponade for retinal detachment repair.
