Zimeldine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of zimeldine, the first SSRI developed, which selectively inhibits the serotonin transporter to increase synaptic serotonin availability for antidepressant effects. It was withdrawn from the market due to cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome and other hypersensitivity-related neurological adverse events. Its development and withdrawal provided critical lessons for the subsequent design and safety monitoring of the SSRI drug class.
