Vigabatrin
This anticonvulsant medication is used to treat infantile spasms (a severe form of epilepsy in babies) and as an add-on treatment for complex partial seizures that have not responded to other medications. It works by blocking an enzyme that breaks down GABA, increasing levels of this inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. A serious and irreversible side effect is progressive narrowing of peripheral vision (visual field loss), which can occur in up to one-third of patients.
