Zanamivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor that competitively blocks the influenza virus neuraminidase enzyme, preventing cleavage of sialic acid from host cell surface glycoproteins and inhibiting viral release, spread, and penetration of respiratory mucus. It is inhaled via the Diskhaler device for treatment and prevention of influenza A and B infections. Its topical inhalation route limits systemic bioavailability while delivering high drug concentrations to the respiratory tract.
